Northfork Fin and Filet: Gourmet Food, Northwoods Hospitality
By Kelly Rhode, Northwoods News Contributor
While the title “foodie” means different things to everyone, my husband and I take the term to heart. Trying new and inventive foods and enjoying the traditional fare of regions all over the country is one of our favorite things to do. With more than 20 years spent cooking at local restaurants and currently working in the service industry, my husband knows the ins and outs of great food. And with my 39+ years of loving to eat delicious food, I guess you could call us both “foodies”.
So when my husband suggested we go out to dinner somewhere nice, the first place we thought of was Northfork Fin and Filet. It has been a very busy summer here in the Northwoods, so now that it has settled down a bit, we were finally able to go have our first experience there. And we weren’t disappointed! With its rustic yet modern vibe we were immediately drawn in by the friendly, smiling faces that greeted us!
We opted to have a pre-dinner cocktail at the bar and were helped right away by Eugene. We were offered a huge list of unique drinks along with wine and beer options. It was difficult to choose with the great selections that were offered. The Old Fashioned list stood out to us. I ordered the Cranberry Old Fashioned and my husband decided on one crafted with blood orange flavors. Eugene promptly made our drinks. They were different from the traditional way that we are accustomed to, but we were delighted with the creative twist on a Wisconsin staple. Next time, I think we may venture out and try one of the Moscow Mules that was on the menu.
Originally, we were going to ask the hostess for a table, but after having a wonderful conversation with Eugene, we decided this time we would eat at the bar. I am so happy that we did! The service was outstanding, just as if we were tucked away at our own private little table. We were given excellent suggestions and had the hardest time deciding what to order. But as Eugene said, “Narrow down your choices and whatever you decide will be fantastic. And you can always order your other choice next time.” And, boy, was he right!
My husband and I both decided to order the six-ounce premium grade filet with a side order of two shrimp and two scallops. I chose to go with the parmesan potato bites and my husband went with the cheesy potatoes. The anticipation of the arrival of our food was almost too much to bear and made our mouths water.
But before we knew it, our meal had been served! What laid before us was a feast for our eyes and stomachs. The char and the grill marks on the steak were absolutely stunning. Same with the shrimp and scallops. Our steaks were seasoned so well and cooked to perfection! Our dinner melted in our mouths. Everything was so delectable; I did not want it to end.
As we finished our meal, an attentive and welcoming gentleman named Dan came over and greeted us, making sure we were happy with everything. We excitedly told him that our dining experience had exceeded our expectations. Our conversation was great, and we left the restaurant already knowing that another visit was in store – just to visit Eugene and Dan!
Everything from the service we received to the high end, yet familiar Northwoods feel was so amazing, and we will definitely be back again. What an incredible dining experience!
