DESCRIPTION:Come along on a guided historical and naturalist bike ride through the towns of Manitowish and Mercer! Jim Bokern of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society and Hannah Gargrave\, NLDC Naturalist\, will lead you along the paved bike trail and discuss some interesting history and natural history of the area that includes moonshining\, river ecology\, logging and railroad days\, Native American portages\, unique habitats that moose call home\, and much more! We’ll be renting e-bikes from River’s Edge Adventure Company\, and cost of rental is included in registration. Helmets are included with rental.  Bring water and comfortable biking footwear and clothing\, and cash for ice cream. Participants will meet at River’s Edge Adventure Company\, and will be shuttled back to their vehicles at the end.  Registration is required by 8/24/24.

SUMMARY:Lowenwood Old-Growth Forest Walk with John Bates and Mary Burns
DESCRIPTION:Join Naturalists John Bates and Mary Burns for this unique hiking experience.  Lowenwood\, the 1\,200-acre former site of the Conserve School\, is home to 8 lakes\, 24 miles of trails\, and borders the Sylvania Wilderness Area in the U.P. The forests of “Lowenwood\,” named after James Lowenstine\, the founder of the school\, demonstrate different stages of ecosystem recovery along with patches of old-growth hemlock-hardwoods. We’ll hike a 2.5-mile loop trail along Lake Elaine and out to Big Bateau Lake that contains much of the old-growth. We’ll go slow and discuss the many attributes of old-growth forests.Lowenwood is not open to the general public. The actual hike will be from 9:00-1 2:00\, with lunch from 12:00-12:30.  Participants will have the option to meet at the Discovery Center at 8 :00 am and ride in our van for this hike\, we will also be returning to the Discovery Center at 1:30pm.

Mice\, voles\, moles\, shrews\, squirrels and chipmunks\, oh my! We’ll learn to identify different species by their appearance\, and we’ll learn how scientists collect data through live trapping procedures! NLDC Naturalists will go step-by-step through the proper protocols for capturing and releasing live animals. Children will not be allowed to handle small mammals\, but will have the opportunity to assist our staff.  A morning snack will be provided\, however participants must bring their own lunch\, a water bottle\, and have weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. Child drop-off is between 7:45am and 8:00am. This program is intended for children ages 5-11 years old. Registration required by 8/19/24.  Wednesday 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM.  $40/Non-Member and $30/Member.  Participants will meet in the Torest/Water Rooms in Discovery Hall.

DESCRIPTION:Putting tiny stickers on the late summer migrating generation provides incredible citizen science data about their population and migration habits.  Join Naturalist Hannah for this fun hybrid program.  Prior to this in-person tagging and garden exploration program\, Hannah will email you a link to a virtual program where she describes the incredible life cycle\, adaptations\, migration and more of the amazing monarch butterfly.  For this in-person portion of the program\, learn how to tag a monarch and assist Hannah as she tags resident monarch butterflies for release.  Fun for all ages! Our monarch tagging program is sponsored by a grant from Xcel Energy. Registration required by 8/15/24.  $10/Non-Member and Members are free.
