DESCRIPTION:Come along on a guided historical and naturalist bike ride through the towns of Manitowish and Mercer! Jim Bokern of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society and Hannah Gargrave\, NLDC Naturalist\, will lead you along the paved bike trail and discuss some interesting history and natural history of the area that includes moonshining\, river ecology\, logging and railroad days\, Native American portages\, unique habitats that moose call home\, and much more! We’ll be renting e-bikes from River’s Edge Adventure Company\, and cost of rental is included in registration. Helmets are included with rental.  Bring water and comfortable biking footwear and clothing\, and cash for ice cream. Participants will meet at River’s Edge Adventure Company\, and will be shuttled back to their vehicles at the end.  Registration is required by 8/24/24.

DESCRIPTION:Learn what John Dillinger and his gang were really like and the “behind the scenes” story of their weekend in Manitowish Waters as we travel by pontoon to historic Dillinger sites. Enjoy a box lunch and tour the grounds of the famous Little Bohemia Lodge\, the property that was featured in the movie Public Enemies. The tour is led by Manitowish Waters Historical Society (MWHS) member\, Kay Krans. Lunch cost is included in the registration fee. Lunch will be held 12:00-1:00 PM for both sessions of the tour.  Please note Little Bohemia is not open when the morning tour departs so there is no available restroom facility onsite.

DESCRIPTION:Learn what John Dillinger and his gang were really like and the “behind the scenes” story of their weekend in Manitowish Waters as we travel by pontoon to historic Dillinger sites. Enjoy a box lunch and tour the grounds of the famous Little Bohemia Lodge\, the property that was featured in the movie Public Enemies. The tour is led by Manitowish Waters Historical Society (MWHS) member\, Kay Krans. Lunch cost is included in the registration fee. Lunch will be held 12:00-1:00 PM for both sessions of the tour.  Please note Little Bohemia is not open when the morning tour departs so there is no available restroom facility onsite.

SUMMARY:Lowenwood Old-Growth Forest Walk with John Bates and Mary Burns
DESCRIPTION:Join Naturalists John Bates and Mary Burns for this unique hiking experience.  Lowenwood\, the 1\,200-acre former site of the Conserve School\, is home to 8 lakes\, 24 miles of trails\, and borders the Sylvania Wilderness Area in the U.P. The forests of “Lowenwood\,” named after James Lowenstine\, the founder of the school\, demonstrate different stages of ecosystem recovery along with patches of old-growth hemlock-hardwoods. We’ll hike a 2.5-mile loop trail along Lake Elaine and out to Big Bateau Lake that contains much of the old-growth. We’ll go slow and discuss the many attributes of old-growth forests.Lowenwood is not open to the general public. The actual hike will be from 9:00-1 2:00\, with lunch from 12:00-12:30.  Participants will have the option to meet at the Discovery Center at 8 :00 am and ride in our van for this hike\, we will also be returning to the Discovery Center at 1:30pm.

SUMMARY:Eco Ed-Venture: Small Mammals
DESCRIPTION:This program will introduce children to some of the interesting characteristics of small and furry mammals that live all around us. Mice\, voles\, moles\, shrews\, squirrels and chipmunks\, oh my! We’ll learn to identify different species by their appearance\, and we’ll learn how scientists collect data through live trapping procedures! NLDC Naturalists will go step-by-step through the proper protocols for capturing and releasing live animals. Children will not be allowed to handle small mammals\, but will have the opportunity to assist our staff.  A morning snack will be provided\, however participants must bring their own lunch\, a water bottle\, and have weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. Child drop-off is between 7:45am and 8:00am. This program is intended for children ages 5-11 years old. Registration required by 8/19/24.  Wednesday 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM.  $40/Non-Member and $30/Member.  Participants will meet in the Torest/Water Rooms in Discovery Hall.
