SUMMARY:Lowenwood Old-Growth Forest Walk with John Bates and Mary Burns
DESCRIPTION:Join Naturalists John Bates and Mary Burns for this unique hiking experience.  Lowenwood\, the 1\,200-acre former site of the Conserve School\, is home to 8 lakes\, 24 miles of trails\, and borders the Sylvania Wilderness Area in the U.P. The forests of “Lowenwood\,” named after James Lowenstine\, the founder of the school\, demonstrate different stages of ecosystem recovery along with patches of old-growth hemlock-hardwoods. We’ll hike a 2.5-mile loop trail along Lake Elaine and out to Big Bateau Lake that contains much of the old-growth. We’ll go slow and discuss the many attributes of old-growth forests.Lowenwood is not open to the general public. The actual hike will be from 9:00-1 2:00\, with lunch from 12:00-12:30.  Participants will have the option to meet at the Discovery Center at 8 :00 am and ride in our van for this hike\, we will also be returning to the Discovery Center at 1:30pm.
